The Power of a Promise

“Then this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “This is what the Lord says: If you can break my covenant with the day and the night so that one does not follow the other, only then will my covenant with my servant David be broken. Only then will he no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. The same is true for my covenant with the Levitical priests who minister before me.”

Jeremiah 33:19-21, NLT

I’ve broken many promises, and I’ve had many people break promises they made to me. I’ve let people down, and I have had those closest to me let me down. I have failed to keep my word, and I have also been on the receiving end of that.

We are human, and we make mistakes. It’s so easy though to focus only on the failings of humanity, and without even realizing it, put God in that same box. The box of only what we are able to comprehend, but He is so much more than that.

Right this very moment, God is in covenant with the day and night. Every element in our universe is completely in sync and is functioning the way He designed it to. Every star is perfectly positioned, every planet orbits the correct way and everything is in perfect balance.

If we, in our severely finite humanity, could somehow disrupt and unbalance the natural flow of day into night, only then would God break His promise to David.

I read these Scriptures, and I am so convinced that this is true, but when I’m in my own personal season of strife I can so easily become distracted by what I perceive to be silence from heaven. Do I truly trust and understand that the same applies to me?

Verse 25 in the Contemporary English Version reads like this “Jeremiah, I will never break my agreement with the day and the night or let the sky and the earth stop obeying my commands.”

If God has entered into covenant with you by way of promise, you can be sure that He will never break, go against or change it in any way.

If God has entered into covenant with you by way of promise, you can be sure that He will never break, go against or change it in any way. He has pledged His faithfulness to you, and you can confidently hold onto that.

We have been given a powerful weapon to use against lies and deception from the enemy. Psalms 91:4 tells us “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”

Whatever is thrown your way in this life, you can be sure that His promises will protect you. Use them to guard your mind and thoughts. Pray them over your family, friends and community. Audibly say them, put them out into the atmosphere and watch as God does what He promised He would do.
