Confusion can be defined as the lack of understanding, the state of being unclear in one’s mind, or bewildered.
Things happen in this life and of this world that lead me to feeling confused, and the feeling of confusion has always affected me deeply- as if it was trying to sink into my soul.
Confusion can be easily encountered by turning on the news, reading through social media posts, or through a simple conversation with a friend. Miscommunications, mixed messages, evil being seen as good, and good being seen as evil can certainly leave one simply unclear on what to think or feel.
“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” – 1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)
God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. The word confusion in this verse translates from the original Greek as instability, a state of disorder, and disturbance.
And it can be a breeding ground for the enemy. One moment of mental instability or disturbance can be used to fuel assumptions, raise anxiety, create strife or bitterness, and tries to draw us away from Jesus, the source of our life.
If you are in a battle that is causing you to feel unstable or confused – that confusion is not from God.
In 1 Corinthians 14:33, the word peace translates from the Greek as, “the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is.”
The thoughts of the Lord are assurance and contentment. The thoughts of the Lord are sure and steady.
If you are struggling with confusion, first cling to our firm foundation, Jesus Christ. Seek the Lord in prayer and root yourself in His Word!

We can be open, upfront, and honest about exactly what we are feeling and struggling with. He knows, He just wants us to trust Him enough to be fully open and bring our struggles to Him! His Word instills in us His truth and anchors us when things feel unsteady.
My favorite verses to think upon when confusion tries to creep in is 2 Timothy 1:7, Philippians 4:7-8, and Isaiah 41:10. I encourage you to write these where they can be easily seen as a reminder that He gives us this word to help us keep a sound mind and peace despite the confusion that tries creep into our minds.
If the confusion and ill feelings are towards a brother or sister in Christ – go to them and talk things out. Clear and effective communication is crucial and so necessary to clear the fog, promote understanding, and grow forward together. This means active listening and clearly stating offenses so things can be discussed and resolved.
Confusing things and thoughts happen to everyone because we are all human. But how we respond is everything. Do we seek truth and clarity, or do we dwell in confusion and let it grow?

You are not alone, and there is hope when our minds are weighed down by the heaviness that confusion brings.
Run to the Peace Speaker. Reach out to that person to help quench resentment and bitterness. Trust in the Lord and let us not lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).
